I'm doing a project on the effectiveness of team building in the workplace. Is there anyway to get good statistics on the cost and results of team building (changes in productivity)?

Also I heard a rumor that the Harvard Business Review has an article on Toyota toting team building and that there was new data coming out disputing Toyota's claims. However I can not find it, do I have the wrong website, search terms?

I think that the article from the Harvard Business Review you are referencing is:

The Contradictions That Drive Toyota's Success.Takeuchi, Hirotaka; Osono, Emi; Shimizu, Norihiko. Harvard Business Review, Jun2008, Vol. 86 Issue 6, p96-104

You can read an abstract of it at the Harvard Business Review site:

http://harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu/b02/en/common/item_detail.jhtml;jsessionid=BCLJLE4TH2I1OAKRGWDR5VQBKE0YIISW?id=R0806F

However, in order to read the whole article, you will either need to purchase it from the website or check to see if your local public or academic library has a subscription (either print or electronic) to this journal.

You'll probably need to find some case studies in academic journals. Your best bet might be to run searches in proprietary databases, like EBSCOBusiness or LexisNexis, available at some libraries.

If you need freely available journal articles, here are a couple of places you can try:

Social Science Research Network

(Here's a link to the article: Team Incentives and Worker Heterogeneity: An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of Teams on Productivity and Participation; http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=277309, as an example of what is available there)

OAIster: http://www.oaister.org/

(Many full-text academic journal articles free online; try doing a search for "subject: business" "entire record: team building")

And here's a directory of other open-access business journals: http://www.doaj.org/doaj?func=subject&cpid=18

Good luck with your research!

Andrew Bynum. Every year he only improves, and under the guidance of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he can easily become the best center in the game in about two to three years, based on how much he progresses each year. Rondo is great, but he is still inconsistent and averages 4 turnovers a game. So long as you get Bynum some touches, he can be the most dominant player in the game. Bynum this year: 18.3 ppg (Not only did he improve over the last year by exactly 7 ppg., but he's also doing this with Kobe on the team, and shooting at 58% with just 13 touches a game) 12.2 rpg. (Improved by 2.8 rpg. from last season) 2.0 bpg. 2.6 turnovers per game 68% free throw shooter Rajon Rondo this year: 12.3 ppg. (43% shooting) 11.0 apg. (Doing very well for a young player with aging teammates) 4.8 rpg. (Pretty good for a point guard) 1.8 spg. (A a decline from the past few years) 3.6 turnovers per game (In six years he increased his topg. ratio from 1.8 to 3.6. Each year, he averages .3 topg more from the season prior. At this rate, if he plays to his 13th season, he'll average 4.2 turnovers a game for his career!) 59% free throw shooter (Worse than Bynum's, a center. Also, a point guard who's quick can easily get to the basket and draw a foul and some contact, but can he knock down the free throws? And oddly enough, his free throw percentage has gotten much worse compared to his first few years in the league) I removed some statistics that each player's respective positions wouldn't normally be good at. You can clearly see that Rondo is a very inconsistent player, and although he is a great passer, he makes bad choices frequently in a game. He doesn't seem to be doing anything to improve his shooting/scoring ability, while Bynum improves his all-around game each season.

Successful Team Building

Successful businesses depend on successful teams. So how do you get your team motivated and raring to go? Successful teams are built on a strong foundation of processes and organizational culture that help them be their very best. Here are a few tips on successful team building.

Team Building Tips

#1 Keep the mix diverse

A strong team with a variety of people who have individual strengths is a formidable force. Keeping this group of people – with clashing temperaments and different working styles – happy, is a challenge. This is where team building activities can help. A day away from the work and engagement in activities where the team members have to put their heads together for a good cause can help forge friendships and associations between team members.

#2 Knowing your team, and yourself

It is important for you and others at the helm, to know how you work and what is a successful team? Introspect on how you function, and try to find areas you need to work on. You can transmute this learning to how you handle your teams and understand how they function too.

#3 Collaborate

To see what motivated team can really achieve, get them to work on collaborative projects. When you know you have to help each other, rather than competing with each other, can change the group dynamic completely. Collaboration helps people thrive and focus on each others’ strengths. That is what sets successful teams apart.

Identify Various Strategies Available to Build Teams

#4 Solve problems together

There is nothing like a good challenge to test the strength of a team. Brainstorming can help you innovative solutions that may have emerged in isolation. You’d be surprised how successful team building activities like a fun Scavenger hunt can teach your team, skills to work together.

#5 Give everyone a chance to air their views

Good teams and successful leaders know when to listen to their teams. Sometimes, the big ideas come from people lower down the rung too. Create a work environment that allows people to share their ideas and solutions to problems.

#6 Lay out team goals and values

A shared sense of purpose can do wonders for team morale. Knowing your work is of value to the organization, business, customer or society in general is a great motivator.

#7 Clearly define roles and responsibilities

In addition to clearly defined goals, winning teams are always clear on who is responsible for what. If everyone knows their role and fit in the bigger picture and who to go to when there is a problem, things run much smoother.

#8 Be clear on communication and share feedback

Crystal clear communication is the hallmark of a successful team. When there are clear channels of communication, conversations and dialogue become easier, even when there are disagreements.

#9 Deal with disputes well

Successful teams have a definite conflict management and resolution strategy. Teams can learn this through conflict management and team building activities. Understanding personality types, communicating better and building trust, can go a long way in building effective teams.

#10 Reward and celebrate

The best way to show someone you value their work, is by celebrating their victories– whether they are big or small. Reward the deserving and it will inspire others in the team, creating a culture that begets success.
