Most are the same to me in terms of speed and uptime. It's customer service that sets them apart. I usually do the "live chat" and ask pre-sales questions. You can tell that many companies have a playbook or something, and it takes forever for the chat to continue when I ask questions.



hostingzoom is definitely the best as far as the skilll level and responsiveness. I only mention hostgator and hostrocket because they were medicore and the rest to me are not that good.



The good news is you probably don't need a lot of support or customer service because online help is pretty prevalent.



If you want upper tier hosting, mediatemple to me is the very very best



I think the reason you won't hear much about mediatemple or hostingzoom is lack of a good affiliate program. For the hosting companies that have good affiliate programs, hostgator and hostrocket are good. I didn't really like bluehost that much. I have probably worked with 10 of the "personal" hosting companies that have good affliliate programs (startlogic, webhostingbuzz, etc..) and hostgator and hostrocket would be the best of those.

It's tough to say which web host is the best, it depends what you are looking for. But for basic hosting I recommend you visit http://www.webhostingdiscounts.net/ They have what I believe are the top 10 hosting companies and you can compare them side-by-side. I have hosted with many of them and they are all pretty good; they are all fairly big and well established so I'd say you really can't go wrong with any of them. Even the cheapest ones still give you a lot for your money. And honestly you won't use even a fraction of the features that the web hosts offer so I would focus on reliability/uptime and price when making your selection.
