Did you receive an email recently from eBay that states "Password Reset Required"? I'm trying to see if this is for real and not spam.

Brief Analysis

The email is legitimate and you should indeed change your eBay password. eBay recently discovered that hackers had accessed their customer database, which holds encrypted passwords and other personal information. According to the company, there is no evidence that customer financial information was compromised. However, the company is asking users to change their passwords to 'help ensure the trust and security of all eBay customers'. While this email is valid and really is from eBay, watch for copycat scams that attempt to capitalize on news of the breach.

IMPORTANT: PASSWORD UPDATE

Dear eBay Member,

To help ensure customers' trust and security on eBay, I am asking all eBay users to change their passwords.

Here's why: Recently, our company discovered a cyberattack on our corporate information network. This attack compromised a database containing eBay user passwords.

What's important for you to know: We have no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised. And your password was encrypted.

Detailed Analysis

eBay Password Reset Email is Legitimate:

If you are an eBay customer, you may have received an email asking you to change your account password. At first glance, the email may look suspect because phishing scammers often send out bogus 'account update' messages.

However, this email is legitimate and really is from eBay. The company is asking its users to change their passwords to 'help ensure the trust and security of all eBay customers.'

Significant eBay Security Breach:

In May 2014, eBay discovered that hackers had recently accessed its customer database. Given that the site has 233 million customers, this is a very significant security breach.

The compromised database holds encrypted passwords as well as other -unencrypted - personal information such as customer names, email and physical addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth.

eBay states that it has 'no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised'. However, this rather vague assurance has done little to alleviate the concerns of users.

The possible implications for eBay's customers remain unclear. The unencrypted personal information accessed in the breach could be used in targeted phishing attacks or in identity theft attempts.

Heed the Advice in the eBay Notification:

Given the significance of this breach, you should certainly go to eBay and change your password as advised in the notification message. In fact, if you are an eBay customer, you would be wise to login to your eBay account and change your password even if you have not yet received the notification email.

Beware of 'Copycat' Scams:

Scammers are usually quick to capitalize on news of such security breaches. Watch out for 'copycat' scam emails that pretend to be from eBay and ask you to update details by clicking a link or opening an attached file. If you receive such an email, do not click on any links or open any attachments that it contains.

Note that the genuine eBay notification does not ask you to click a link. Instead, it asks that you go to eBay in your usual way and login to change your password.

The one thing no one else here is telling you....

Yes eBay was hacked and they are recommending a password change. Even so, if you got an e-mail link NEVER (for all sites, not just eBay) click on a link in the e-mail. If you go to eBay on your own and change your password without clicking on any links, you can be sure that you are on the true site and that you are changing your password and even if the original e-mail was a bogus hack job, you are still safe.

Yes i guess you are! Overall Ebay is safe, safe as it can be. They have as many rules as they can to control the masses who sell and buy there, for eaches protection. I have bought over a hundred items. One person cancelled a month after I purchased, and I got my refund. One gave me a discount when the magazine that was suppose to be in perfect shape wasnt. One shorted me a part, never appologized or emailed, but did mail it to me when I asked. One sent a glass item really poorly packaged, I sent a cell taken pic to them and to ebay and pay pal, I got my total refund and did nto have to to pay for postage to return it. Besides that, Its been awesome and alot of fun Rules for a good experience. Buy from sellers with a 98.6 to 100 percent rating, read the negatives instead of the positives.I think some sellers can fake purchases to bury the feedback that is negative, those I will not buy from, youll see what I mean if you get into ebay. I look at many sellers selling the same item, I look at the pics closely, I read the description or request it by email if theres not enough info. I realise that sellers are just like you and me, and do not rush to the post office to mail it and may not see you won for a few days, and emergenices in life do happen, as in family issues, or say a flood or a katrina type disaster thing I do find ebay has a chat now button on the home page once in awhile not all the time but during usual business days and I do chat to with operators about concerns with purchases. I do contact pay pal if there is an issue, they have rules for sellers and buyers, so its good to under stand their policies. If you dont like the terms of the ad, do not purchase. There are crabby sellers, who do no refunds, and do not answer emails etc etc. Really read the ads, a dress for 12.00 can have a shipping fee of 125.00 so watch for that! You must have a checking account to register with pay pal, no pay pal no buying on ebay. Its fun, its exciting to win an auction, but mostly I now buy, buy it now, I want that item now!! Most do this, see your day the day after you buy,no matter what automated emails you get, and then ship within three days and you will recieve it within 5 more days. Some people get really involved in explaining how they ship on certain days and have dif ways of shipping and the dif costs etc. So yes, you are one of the few.Amazon is a great place to shop too!! If you purchase through Amazon, and its them selling the item instead of a person or what they call a store, they let you return anything for any reason, you say, did not meet my expectations, and you dont even pay postage to return the item as most ebay sellers make you do!!!! Give it a try. Where else can you look at 1000 purses in one long sitting at a computer, no gas, no expenses being at the mall all day and viola you usually find what you want! I have also purchased some things from China, and from AU. The persons had good feedback, normal US shipping charges, and the items were great. Just really look at the pics and read the full description. Youll be Ebaying in no time!!!
